Clinical Water Dance

Kibbutz Lotan, Israel

  December 31, 2003

This Interview is taken from Alexanders wonderful website: www.healingdance.org

Israeli born Erez Beatus is not yet 30 years old as of this writing, but he has already accomplished so much in the water. From a background as a scuba diver and instructor he went on to study freediving with world champions Pipin and Umberto. Since 1997 he has instructed freediving, establishing both the Israeli Freediving Team and the Israeli Freediving Federation. He has taken part in four international competitions (AIDA) in 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2003. In September of 2001 he became the world record holder for the 'unassisted constant ballast' category with a dive of 46 meters. Erez received his education as a swimming instructor and hydrotherapist from the Wingate Institute in Israel, with additional studies in Thai and medical massage. Most recently, between 2000 and 2004, Erez completed 9 trainings in Watsu, WaterDance and Healing Dance. In addition to sessions with "regular" receivers, he has combined his freediving, WaterDance and hydrotherapy training in work with people with special needs in the therapy pool of "Tel-Hashomer" Hospital in Tel Aviv, Israel. This work is the focus of the following interview. Erez is currently living in Australia and can be contacted at \n This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Alexander: So Erez, it's an honor to be interviewing you.  I'm really excited and happy that we're finally getting around to this. It's been a project I've wanted to do with you for a long time to bring your work clinical work with WaterDance into greater recognition in the water community.

Erez: Thank you.

A: I think it would be interesting for people to know how it all started for you in the water, what your history in water is.

E: My water experiences started I think as soon as I could remember my name. From the age of three my earliest memories, as my parents keep on reminding me the last few years, are me sitting in the bathtub, head in the water, the butt above the water, just holding my breath for fun.

A:  Really?!

E: Yeah, at the age of three, four and five. And I was holding my breath for 40 seconds and my father was timing me with a stopwatch.  So it's their fault, it's not my fault! And then I was always swimming in the pool.  I started swimming at the age of two, something like that. And it was never professionally, never competing.  A few years ago I started asking myself, why not, because I was always really good in swimming. It's something I regretted not doing.  So I started swimming in a group a few years ago to say to myself, I can do it!  But it was always water for me -- dreams of water, thoughts of water.  Whenever I want to relax and just get away from things it will always be water, the ocean more than the swimming pool; it's much more energetic for me.

A: At what age did the young Erez discover the ocean?

E: I started spearfishing with my brother when I was eight. I would go out for a half an hour the first time, than an hour, two hours.  I caught myself skipping school and going spearfishing for five or six hours just for the fun of it! It has gotten to a place lately where I am going down and I see the fish but don't do anything.  I just lie on the bottom looking at the fish and imagining things.  My attitude has started changing recently towards water and fishing, becoming much more photographic than interested in hunting. It was precisely this other side of me that started it all.
